NOSTALGIA

NOSTALGIA
A basic subtext of the Western myth is nostalgia for a time in the past when life was somehow better than the present. Early Westerns consciously reminisced about the end of the frontier. But all Westerns look nostalgically to the Western moment in order to explore contemporary problems. The concept of nostalgia implies not just a looking back but a longing for the older times. Anatural argument about Westerns, then, is that nostalgia for the days of the American frontier ultimately is the basis for everything Western, whether movies, novels, rodeos, or even Western fashion. The problem, of course, is what the nostalgia actually refers back to.
